by-law, n. [Cf. Sw. bylag, D. bylov, Icel. b, fr. Sw. & Dan. by town, Icel. bær, byr (fr. bûa to dwell) + the word for law; hence, a law for one town, a special law. Cf. Birlaw and see Law.].
