CIDE DICTIONARY

Trans-,  [L. trans across, over.].
     A prefix, signifying over, beyond, through and through, on the other side, as in transalpine, beyond the Alps; transform, to form through and through, that is, anew, transfigure.  [1913 Webster]

1 across, beyond (transcontinental; transgress).
2 on or to the other side of (transatlantic) (opp. CIS-).
3 through (transonic).
4 into another state or place (transform; transcribe).
5 surpassing, transcending (transfinite).
6 Chem. a (of an isomer) having the same atom or group on opposite sides of a given plane in the molecule (cf. CIS- 4). b having a higher atomic number than (transuranic).
