Syphilis, n. [NL., fr. Syphilus, the name of a shepherd in the Latin poem of Fracastoro, “Syphilus, sive Morbus Gallicus,” which was published in 1530; Gr. hog, swine + dear, loving. The term was introduced into nosology by Sauvages.].
